American Tribal Style® (ATS) belly dance

Beginner

Course description: A modern form of belly dance with ancient roots. Emerging in San Francisco in the 1980’s this new form of belly dance has been embraced all around the world. It has an improvised format with the dancers using a series of shared moves and cues. Dancers are able to respond in the moment to the audience, musicians and each other. It’s lots of fun for the dancers and audience and you don’t need to remember any choreography!

In this class, start to learn the basics of belly dancing, including an introduction to playing finger cymbals. While the class is based on an American Tribal Style (ATS)® format, much of the content is relevant to other styles of belly dance.

Wear comfortable clothing suitable for exercise and bring a bottle of water. No experience required.

Continuing Beginner

Course description: The American Tribal Style Belly Dance (ATS)® Continuing class builds on improvisational basics learned at the Beginner level. In this class, students will become more comfortable with a variety of American Tribal Style (ATS)® steps and formations, enhancing their dance with finger cymbals. This class focuses on improving your technique and precision, and offers students the opportunity to share in the spontaneous creativity of improvised dance.

Previous experience with American Tribal Style® Belly Dance is required. Bring a bottle of water and your own finger cymbals.

Intermediate

Course description: A faster-paced and more challenging intermediate class for dancers wishing to extend their skills in American Tribal Style® belly dance. This class will offer more complex dance combinations and formations, belly dance drills for fitness and conditioning, simple floor work (optional), new zill patterns and ongoing development in the art of dance improvisation. Dancers will start to prepare for performance opportunities and explore costuming, make up, jewellery, musicality, dance etiquette and the history of ATS. Bring a bottle of water and your own finger cymbals.

Students taking the intermediate class must also enrol in the continuing beginners’ class.

Advanced and Teacher Training

Classes are run by Pippa by private appointment.

Each lesson is individually tailored to the student.

Students who have an ATS Teacher certification can use these classes to maintain their certification, but please note that students interested in being issued with an ATS certificiation must contact the Fat Chance Belly Dance studio in the United States.

Middle Eastern Music Workshop

Course description: This two hour music workshop will take you on a journey to the Middle East. Using the hand drum, finger cymbals and tambourine you’ll learn the basic rhythms used in Middle Eastern music for belly dance. An open workshop for men and women.

Ali has a fun and dynamic teaching style, 25 years of performance experience and a passion for supporting students (and particularly dancers) to create their own percussion with confidence and joy. This workshop will demystify the relationship between dance rhythms; participants will experiment with a range of different percussion instruments and explore fun ways to play for each other.
